Pets — A Hidden Casualty of War

by Vicki Holt on July 18, 2009

Armed_Forces_Collage_2By one recent account, we still have 130,000 troops in Iraq. Then there are the soldiers in Afghanistan and those stationed elsewhere in the world. That represents a lot of disrupted families while our heroic soldiers serve, and far too many pets who have lost their homes in the process.

Those of us who volunteer in animal rescue programs have seen many a heart-wrenching plea for help finding temporary homes for pets who are displaced when one or both of their owners are deployed.

Finally we have a few options for help. If you know of anyone facing this dilemma, please share these resources with them:

PetFosterCare.com for military personnel –Assists people in the military and other related government organizations who have to leave their beloved pets behind. http://www.alphataxservices.com/military/classifieds/petfostercare.asp

Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pets – Supports military service members, veterans, and their beloved pets to ensure pets are reunited with owners following deployment or emergency hardship. http://www.guardianangelsforsoldierspet.org/

Operation Noble Foster – Cat foster care program.  http://operationnoblefoster.org/

Net Pets – A  nationwide and global network of individual foster homes that will house, nurture and care for the dogs, cats, birds, horses and all other pets for all the Military personnel only.  https://www.netpets.org/netp/foster.php

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Best wishes, honor and many thanks to all of our troops and their families.

On a related topic, I have a good service to help people find their lost pets at http://www.findmylostpet.net
