Grey Muzzle – Helping Senior Pets

by Vicki on August 27, 2009

As some of you know, I have a special fondness for senior animals. I adopted 11 year old dogs a year apart who are now 13 and 14, and I have a 12 year old cat. I hope they are with me for years, but when they’re gone I’ll look for more seniors to adopt.

There’s just something settled about the old ones. That doesn’t mean bland, by any means. Scooty is one of the sweetest, easiest dogs I’ve known. Ernie, on the other hand, is full of mischief and sometimes tries my patience so much that a friend thinks he was my husband in a past life. And then he puts on his angelic mask and snores softly through the afternoon.

But my pets aren’t really the subject of this post. I want to talk about a wonderful non-profit group I’ve begun volunteering with called the Grey Muzzle Organization. Here is the mission of Grey Muzzle:Color_Logo_Nose_Fix

To improve the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescue organizations, sanctuaries, and other non-profit groups nationwide. We fund programs such as hospice care, senior dog adoption, and medical screening.

As you might imagine, seniors are among the hardest to find homes for because people are afraid of taking on the health care expenses of old age and of losing them too soon. If you find yourself struggling with those same feelings but would like to support senior pets in some other way, please consider a donation to Grey Muzzle. You can learn more about their activities at www.greymuzzle.org.
