According to a report in the September/October 2009 issue of Best Friends magazine, Alley Cat Allies has published a study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Association showing that 80% of cats in U.S. households are now spayed or neutered. The percentage goes up significantly as household income increases. In households making $35,000 or more the rate of spaying or neutering is 93%, while households making less than $35,000 have a rate of 51%. Unfortunately, the best research available suggests that fewer than 3% of stray and feral cats are spayed or neutered.
The obvious conclusion is that more low-cost spay and neuter programs are needed to better reach the low-income households and stray and feral cats. For more information on the study, go to www.alleycat.org.
