As a follow up to my original post on taming a feral cat, I want to share the success story of Stacy and Mike in New Hampshire who have been courting a feral cat for the past six months using much the same techniques I used while taming Rico, one tiny step at a time. Their new family friend is Dexter, and he finally walked in the house far enough to close the door behind him. They had cleverly created a cubby hole outside for him out of hay, in case they couldn’t get him indoors before winter set in. I thought the idea might be useful for others, so here is a picture of it:
Dexter yawning comfortably in his safe hay hidey hole.
Talking softly, singing, giving him a name that he slowly began to recognize, feeding him and giving him plenty of space to approach slowly over several months was the secret to bringing Dexter indoors.
They are wisely keeping him separate from their other cats until they can get him into a crate and off to the vet for a thorough exam. You can read the details of their process in the comments section of my first post on the subject of taming a feral cat.
