It's so hard losing these wonderful creatures. She sounds like a very special friend and I know you'll miss her. You asked about special lessons we've learned, and like you, I think every pet can be a teacher if we just listen. Through my dog Lydia (and her cancer diagnosis) I have learned to be more in-tune with those around me and to enjoy every day as much as possible.
